During this two week workshop students will learn how to work with sgraffito which is an art technique made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of contrasting colour. The nature of this illustration method will allow them to practice spontaneity in creation. It is a great way to learn to be playful and to improvise.

Submarine is pleased to offer its the first Illustration workshop of our 2026 programme.

Structure

Wk 1
Short presentation to introduce the workshop and the project.
1 hr research and sketching (a brief/ theme will be send out before the workshop but students also welcome to work on their own ideas)
Preparation of the coloured papers.

Wk 2
Sgraffito scratching.

The aim will be for all students to create their own A5artwork using the Sgraffitio technique.

Students following on from the Picture Book Writing course are encourage to develop their story and character ideas.
