Art Clubs

It can be easy to forget what a sophisticated art form comics are, even when their subject matter is a feud between a long-suffering rabbit and a megalomaniacal monkey (as in Jamie’s Smart’s much-loved Bunny vs Monkey). Comics Club is an opportunity for young fans of the genre to have a go at visual storytelling for themselves. Reference materials will be provided for inspiration, from Hergé to The Phoenix. Students will gain insight into storyboarding, narrative structure, pacing and how to make the most of panels and gutters. They’ll think about dialogue and placing speech bubbles. They’ll experiment with character design, facial expressions and backgrounds. But above all else, they’ll have fun and let their imaginations run free. Comics Club gives students confidence both in their drawing skills and in their ability to express themselves.
