Children’s Art Classes

Please consider the age ranges as indicative - every child (and teenager) ages differently and we're open to children attending sessions which are both 'up' a year or two and 'down' a year or two from their age. Please contact us at studio@submarineart.co.uk to discuss if you would like to sign your child up for a group outside their current age.

Fun and beginner friendly, introducing new skills, art clubs include a taster of different types of projects, for example collage, comics and illustration. Students use both physical equipment and digital tools. Specialised classes and courses such as animation and drawing and painting will have themed projects to explore a wide range of skills and techniques in those themes. Past projects have included character design, isometric backgrounds, 'zines and more!

Sometimes it suits family life to drop kids off early. We offer a £5 early drop-off service up to 40 mins before an Art Club starts.

Yes - most projects go home at the end of the class. Digital work is printed out for children to take home, and animations, digital art and photos of drawings are uploaded each week to our digital galleries for you to view together at home.

We build trust with a friendly and relaxed classroom. Our tutors encourage and support children to talk about what they're interested in - often our students find lots of shared interests, including comics, favourite films, sports and more. Over the term students can build confidence, make friends and have a safe space to make art.

A mixture of hand drawn and digital projects - at Submarine, we believe that digital tools work best when they're used to support drawing and design. Some projects don't use screens at all, and others start on paper before we digitally draw. We teach students to use our iPads for focused projects, with supervised use at all times. Our younger classes (age 7-11) focus on drawing, collage and other paper-based techniques, with the occasional taster of stop motion or digital art.

Some of our classes - Stop Motion Club, Animation Club - will have more of a digital focus. Students will be taught how to use our digital tools to bring their drawings and stories to life. We often combine this with activities on paper, including character design, plasticine modelling and storyboarding.

If you're wanting a class that has less of a digital focus, our Art Clubs and Comic Club are a great way to join in. Each week we focus on a different project - these focus on drawing, design, collage, 'zines, comics and more. Sometimes a week may focus on stop motion, digital animation or digital art - our tutors will teach children how to use the iPad as a digital tool. Any iPad use is supervised and focused, and used to support learning and creativity.

Yes, wherever possible, we work with our tutor team to meet additional student needs in the classroom. We aim to keep noise levels at a comfortable level for everyone, and let students work at the pace they need. We aren't able to provide 1:1 support - please email our team if your child needs you to stay on site during sessions.
